The real reason Melania Trump wore a big hat to greet the Royal Family has been revealed, as she arrived with the President for their state visit.
U.S. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump landed in the U.K. just yesterday (September 17), for a historic second state visit.
They arrived on the grounds of Windsor Castle and were greeted by Prince William and Kate Middleton, who accompanied them to meet the King and Queen.
The First Lady, 55, wore a Christian Dior Haute Couture dark grey skirt suit, and finished off the elegant look with an extremely large purple wool hat, also by Dior.
But it’s not the first time that Melania has chosen an extraordinarily big hat for an occasion of importance, and people are starting to wonder why.
For the most part, the purple hat kept her eyes hidden from public gaze, which may well have been a carefully thought-through move from the First Lady.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Body language expert Judi James suggested that the mom-of-one wore the hat in a bid to keep a low profile.
More interestingly, she noted that it was an attempt not to overshadow her husband’s big moment.
James said: “I’m fascinated to work out why Melania is wearing a similar shaped hat to the one she wore to the inauguration, which forms the shape of a large lid that completely hides her face.
“For a woman known for her beauty, this shape of hat suggests a desire to hide.
“Royal women will tend to adore the flying saucer style too, but will always wear the hat at an acute angle to ensure their faces are totally on display.”
The expert suggested that Melania was reinforcing the point that she is not the ‘star’ of the show during the state visit.
James added: “Melania’s body language so far suggests a more assertive and confident approach to this royal visit than the last one.
“She also seems to be keen to project a more mysterious aura here on the arrival, as though she is there to support and even help choreograph her husband rather than being the star herself.”
Users on X (formerly Twitter) were quick to call out the unusually large hat, as one said: “You literally can’t see half of Melania’s face in that hat.
“All she can see is the brim and everyone else is talking to her chin.”
Another added: “I’m not a fan of Melania’s hat. It’s hard to see her face.”
